The AI built into Google Ads
Start here before you pay for anything else. These features work on your own account data and need no extra subscription.
| Feature | What it does | Your control |
|---|---|---|
| Smart Bidding | Sets bids at auction time from your conversion goals | Choose goal, target and budget |
| AI Max for Search | Matches searches beyond your keywords, adjusts ad text and landing pages | Turn off per campaign or per feature; add brand and URL controls |
| Asset Studio | Generates headlines, descriptions, images and video from prompts or a web page | Review and edit every asset |
| Ask Advisor (beta) | Gemini assistant that answers account questions and drafts ads | It changes things only with your approval |
| Recommendations | Suggests changes to campaigns | Choose what auto-applies and undo from history |
Two notes. Google calls the Optimization score an estimate of account set-up, so 100% does not prove good results. And auto-apply never raises your budget, though you should still choose its types carefully.
Should you switch on AI Max?
AI Max is a layer inside Search campaigns, not a separate campaign type, and it is different from Performance Max, which is its own campaign type. It has three parts: search term matching, text customisation and final URL expansion. Google’s AI Max page says advertisers typically see about 14% more conversions or conversion value at similar CPA or ROAS. That is Google’s own 2025 data, so treat it as a claim to test, not a promise.
The safest route is an experiment. AI Max experiments let you run a 50/50 test inside the same campaign. Shared budgets, portfolio bidding and an active experiment block them, so check the conditions first.
- Controls: AI Max controls cover brand inclusions and exclusions, URL inclusions and exclusions, and text guidelines.
- Bidding: search term matching does not work with Manual CPC, so use conversion-based bidding.
- Reporting: the search terms report has an AI Max match type, and the landing pages view shows which URLs it chose.
- Negatives: negative keywords are still honoured.
A six-step workflow
- Fix conversion tracking. AI optimises towards whatever you measure. Track form fills, calls and WhatsApp clicks, and mark the ones that become real enquiries.
- Research keywords. Use Keyword Planner for ideas and forecasts. It needs a Google Ads account with billing set up. Ask an assistant for variations, then confirm demand in the tool.
- Clean search terms weekly. Open the search terms report, spot irrelevant queries and add them as negatives. By default a search terms and negative keywords addition is exact match, so add variants too.
- Draft ads, then edit. Use Asset Studio or an assistant for headlines and descriptions. Remove claims you cannot prove, and check that every ad matches its landing page.
- Review bidding patiently. Per Google’s Smart Bidding guidance, wait at least one conversion cycle before judging a change, and one to two cycles after changing a target. Google gives no minimum conversion count.
- Measure lead quality. Divide spend by qualified leads, not clicks. If you spend ₹50,000 and get 10 qualified leads, the cost is ₹5,000 each (an illustrative figure).
Example prompt: “Here is an export of search terms with cost and conversions. Group the terms by intent. List the ones that look irrelevant to a Chennai dental clinic and say why. Do not change any numbers.”
Notes for advertisers in India
Per Google’s language targeting page, you can target ads at Tamil speakers, but the Google Ads interface itself is not offered in Tamil. Accounts can be billed in rupees.
Google names English accounts for Ask Advisor, and Asset Studio is also described as English-only. So Tamil ad text still needs a native speaker to check it. Do not assume an AI draft reads naturally. For typical spend levels, see our guide to Google Ads cost in India.
When outside tools help
Paid AI tools for Google Ads earn their place on large accounts or for a specific job: bulk rules, ad tests or reporting. Our comparison of AI tools for PPC covers Optmyzr, Adalysis and others.
For bulk edits, Google Ads Editor 2.13 (July 2026) adds a field to disclose AI-generated images and video. A general assistant such as ChatGPT can also analyse an export you supply. It cannot log in to your account or make changes.
What changed in 2026
- June: target bid strategies are shown as plain Target CPA and Target ROAS, a label change only, per the Google Ads Developer blog.
- May: Ask Advisor and a rebuilt Asset Studio arrived around Google Marketing Live, reported by trade sites.
- July: Google Ads Editor 2.13 added AI Max for Shopping and the AI-content field.
- September: campaigns using text customisation are being upgraded to AI Max, per Google’s help page.
Check your own account, because features reach accounts at different times.
Mistakes to avoid
- Applying every recommendation. Some serve Google’s goals, not yours.
- Automating bids before fixing tracking. The system will optimise towards bad data.
- Switching on AI Max without brand and URL controls. Queries can widen further than you intended.
- Writing near-identical ads. More variants do not help if they say the same thing.
- Judging inside the first cycle. New settings need time, especially with long sales cycles.
Final thoughts
The best use of AI in Google Ads is also the most boring one: clean data in, steady review out. Fix tracking, test AI Max against your current set-up, check search terms every week, and judge everything by qualified leads.

Frequently asked questions
Which AI tool is best for Google Ads?
Start with the features inside Google Ads: Smart Bidding, AI Max, Asset Studio and Ask Advisor. Add a general assistant for drafting and analysis. Consider a specialist tool only if you manage a large account.
Can AI optimise Google Ads automatically?
Partly. Smart Bidding adjusts bids and AI Max widens matching and text on its own. You still choose goals, budget, negatives and landing pages, and you need to review the results.
Can ChatGPT manage a Google Ads account?
No. It can draft keywords and ad text and analyse an export you give it, but it cannot log in or make changes. Check any numbers it produces against your account.
Can AI reduce Google Ads costs?
Not reliably. Google’s own AI Max claim is more conversions at similar cost, not lower cost. Better tracking and negative keywords usually cut waste more than any single AI setting.
Is AI Max suitable for every campaign?
No. It does not suit Manual CPC, and it needs brand and URL controls if wording or landing pages are sensitive. Test it with a 50/50 experiment before you move a whole campaign.
