What is digital marketing for hospitals?

Digital marketing for hospitals is the use of search, maps, content, social media and messaging to help patients find a hospital, trust it and book an appointment. It covers search ads for people who need care now, a Google Maps listing that shows accurate details and honest reviews, treatment pages written with your doctors, and a booking path that gets every enquiry to your front desk.

As a digital marketing agency in Chennai, we run these as one job, so the ad, the listing, the page and the booking are not split between four vendors.

How is it different from other marketing?

A hospital ad is not a shop ad. Health claims are judged by advertising and medical rules, patients are often worried, and one wrong word can harm trust or break a rule. So everything we publish is factual, reviewed by a doctor you name, and free of cure or guaranteed-result claims.

We also count appointments, not clicks, because a click from a worried patient is only useful if someone answers the phone.

What we run

Digital marketing services for hospitals from search to appointment

Google Ads for departments and treatments

People searching for a doctor, a treatment or an emergency service in your area right now

Search ads reach people at the moment they need care, so they usually bring the fastest enquiries, and also the most expensive clicks. We keep every claim factual. For ongoing management, see our PPC agency page.

  • One campaign for each department, so budget follows what you want to grow
  • Ad text checked against ASCI and medical advertising rules before it is submitted
  • Calls and appointment requests counted as the goal, not clicks
  • Search terms reviewed every week and wasted spend cut

Best for

Departments and treatments with steady search demand, such as orthopaedics, dental, fertility and diagnostics

Formats

Search ads with call buttons, location extensions, remarketing

Where patients come from

Channels for hospital marketing: what each gives you

Most hospitals use several. This table shows what each channel is good for and what you do not control.

Hospital marketing channels compared
ChannelWhat the patient wantsWhat you do not controlGood for
Google AdsA doctor or treatment nowThe cost per click, which rises for popular treatmentsDepartments you want to fill quickly
Google Maps and reviewsA nearby hospital they can trustWhat patients write in their reviewsEvery hospital, branch and diagnostic centre
Search contentTo understand a symptom or treatment firstHow long Google takes to rank the pageLasting enquiries across treatments
Social media and campsReminders, health tips and local eventsHow many people see an organic postCamps, new departments and awareness
WhatsApp and callsA quick answer from a real personHow fast your front desk repliesBooking, reminders and follow-up

We run the first four and set up the fifth with your team. We do not run printed ads, hoardings or television.

Choosing a channel

Where we start, by the kind of hospital

The same budget behaves differently for an emergency department and a fertility clinic. This table shows where we begin.

Where we start, by type of hospital
Your hospitalWe would start withFirst number we watch
Multi-speciality hospitalMaps and reviews for each branch, plus Google Ads for two or three departmentsCalls and direction requests, and bookings by department
Single-speciality centre (dental, fertility, orthopaedics)Google Ads for the main treatments, and treatment pages written with your doctorsCost per booked consultation
Diagnostic centre or labMaps, reviews and ads for popular tests and health packagesTest bookings and home-collection requests
Clinic or individual doctorA Business Profile, a simple page and local search adsCalls and appointment requests
A new department or campSocial ads in the area, a registration page and WhatsApp remindersRegistrations and attendance

If your front desk cannot answer every call, we start by fixing that, because more enquiries would only be wasted.

Advertising rules

Rules we check every hospital ad against before it goes live

Health advertising in India is judged by more than one rulebook. This is our summary of what each covers, based on a published compliance guide.

Healthcare advertising rules we check against, and how we apply them
Rule setWhat it covers, as summarisedWhat we do
ASCI Code and Healthcare Guidelines (2023 and 2024)Superlatives such as “best” need evidence, comparative claims are restricted, and before-and-after images have rulesNo unproven “best” or “No. 1” claims, no comparisons with named hospitals, and imagery checked first
NMC Professional Conduct Regulations (2002) and RMP Regulations (2023)How doctors may be promoted and what advertising they may take part inDoctor details limited to what the doctor supplies and approves in writing
Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954Bans advertising of cures for 54 named conditionsNo cure claims for any listed condition, and a doctor reviews wording
Patient privacy (our own practice)Patient names, photos and case details in ads or repliesNever used without written consent, and review replies carry no clinical detail

Six questions to ask before you choose a hospital digital marketing agency

Ask every agency the same questions and compare the answers. Our guide on how to choose a digital marketing agency goes further.

  1. 1

How do you check ads against medical advertising rules?

Ask who reviews each ad and what they do when a claim cannot be proved.

  2. 2

    Who reviews the medical content?

It should be a doctor you name, not a copywriter alone.

  3. 3

Whose name are the accounts in?

Ad accounts, your Business Profile and analytics should be in the hospital’s name from day one.

  4. 4

    What counts as a result?

Clicks are not enough. Ask for calls, bookings and visits by source and department.

  5. 5

How do you handle patient data and reviews?

Patient names and details should never appear in ads or in public replies.

  6. 6

What do you do if a campaign does not work?

A good agency tells you what it will change and by when, not only what it will spend.

Hospital digital marketing FAQs

Plain answers on cost, rules, results and how we work.

How much does digital marketing for hospitals cost in Chennai?

We could not find a published Chennai price list, so we will not invent one. Two market figures from upGrowth, an agency guide (click costs are its own estimates for September 2026): a Google click in healthcare runs about ₹30 to ₹250, with fertility, IVF and cosmetic treatments at the top end. It lists typical starting budgets for healthcare at ₹1,50,000 to ₹5,00,000 a month, and agency management at ₹20,000 to ₹3,00,000 or more a month, or 10% to 20% of ad spend. GST at 18% is added to ad purchases.

These are market ranges, not our price list. Our quote is written after the review and shows our fee and the ad budget as two separate numbers.

Which rules apply to hospital ads in India?

As summarised in a healthcare compliance guide by upGrowth (April 2026), the main ones are the ASCI Code and its Healthcare Guidelines, the NMC rules on how doctors may be promoted, and the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act 1954, which bans cure claims for 54 named conditions. We check every ad and page against these.

Rules change and apply differently to each hospital, so please confirm the current position with your legal adviser. This is general information, not legal advice.

Can you use patient photos, reviews or before-and-after images?

Not without written consent, and some imagery has rules of its own. We do not use patient names, photos or case details in ads. When we reply to a review, we write a short, kind reply that carries no clinical detail. Before-and-after images are used only where the rules allow and the patient has agreed in writing.

Do you run ads for every department?

We usually start with two or three departments that have steady demand and enough capacity to take more patients, then add others. Spreading a small budget across every department tends to give weak results everywhere.

Do you write the medical content?

We write it with your doctors. A health page or post is published only after a doctor you name has read and approved it, and we cite the sources we used. We do not publish advice on dosage, diagnosis or treatment decisions.

What is Google Business Profile and does a hospital need one?

It is the listing that appears on Google Maps and in search when someone looks for your hospital. It shows your address, timings, phone number, photos and reviews. Every hospital and branch should have an accurate one, and our Business Profile service covers it in detail.

Do you work with clinics and individual doctors?

Yes. For digital marketing for doctors, whether a clinic or a single practice, we usually start with a Business Profile, a simple page and local search ads, which cost less than a full hospital campaign. The same rules on claims and patient privacy apply.

Do you run ads in Tamil?

Yes. Our team writes ads, pages and front-desk scripts in Tamil and English. We can run each in its own campaign and compare which one brings more bookings.

Who owns the ad accounts and the Business Profile?

You do. Google Ads, your Business Profile, Google Analytics and the lead sheet are created in the hospital’s name or handed over in full, and we are added as users. If we stop working together, the accounts, the data and the content stay with you.
