What counts as AI search traffic
AI search traffic, also called AI referral traffic, is a visit that begins with a click on a link inside an AI answer. The assistant might be ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity or Claude.
Two things are often mixed up with it. A brand mention in an AI answer, with no click, is visibility, not traffic. A link shown in a Google AI Overview or AI Mode counts as an impression in Search Console. The click lands in the normal Google organic numbers.
So the question “does it convert” only applies to the first kind. For the mention side of the picture, see our guide to AI visibility tracking.
How big is it?
Small, but growing. These figures come from tools that report on thousands of sites, so they describe the web in general and not your site.
| Source | What it measured | Result | Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs benchmark | 115,254 sites using Ahrefs Web Analytics | AI assistants 0.43% of traffic, ChatGPT 0.34% | Sep 2026 |
| SE Ranking study | 101,574 sites | ChatGPT 0.32% of referrals | May 2026 |
| Similarweb | Worldwide gen-AI web traffic share | ChatGPT about 76% to about 53%, Gemini under 9% to about 28% | Jun 2025 to May 2026 |
Each study uses its own sample, so compare trends, not decimals.
The SE Ranking study also found that about 60% of AI-referred visits land on a homepage, against about 17% for organic. That matters for tracking. Your homepage and service pages need a clear next step, because AI visitors often arrive without a specific page in mind.
Does AI search traffic convert?
Probably a little better than organic search, though the evidence is thin. The two best-controlled studies are both from agencies using their own clients’ GA4 data.
| Study | Sample | Finding |
|---|---|---|
| Siege Media (30 Jun 2026) | 78 sites, Jan to May 2026 | Median AI-to-organic conversion ratio 1.26. AI matched or beat organic on 72% of sites. B2B software 1.05, finance 1.67. |
| Digiday (25 Aug 2026), Brainlabs data | 54 client accounts, Jan 2025 to Apr 2026 | Key event rate for AI referrals about 1.5 times organic. |
Treat both with care. AI visits were roughly 0.2% to 3% of sessions in the first study, so one big client can move the median. Both rely on last-click attribution, and neither proves that AI causes better leads.
Skip claims of “4x” or “23x” better conversion. Those come from a single vendor site or a modelled forecast, not from measured results across many sites. We have no data of our own to add, and we will not invent any.
Where to see AI visits and impressions
Four places each show a different piece. None shows everything.
| Report | What it shows | What it misses |
|---|---|---|
| GA4 AI Assistant channel | Sessions from assistants Google recognises | Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and visits with no referrer |
| Search Console AI report | Impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode | Clicks and queries |
| Bing AI Performance (preview) | Citations in Copilot and Bing summaries | Clicks and traffic |
| ChatGPT utm_source | The source tag on ChatGPT links | Assistants that add no tag |
GA4
Since 13 May 2026 the default channel group in GA4 has an “AI Assistant” channel. Google’s channel definitions name ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok as examples and say AI Overviews and AI Mode are excluded. Open Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition, and keep the primary dimension on Session default channel group.
If you want to catch assistants Google does not list, build a custom group from referrer domains. Google’s page on custom channel groups explains how. Test the rule on your own data, because domains with and without “www.” can behave differently.
Search Console, Bing and ChatGPT
The Search Console help page says the generative AI report counts impressions only. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode stay in the normal Web report, as Google’s AI features page also says. Do not add AI impressions to your normal impressions or work out a blended click rate.
Bing’s AI Performance report went into public preview on 10 February 2026. By Bing’s announcement, it reports citations, cited pages and sample grounding queries, with no click data. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds a utm_source=chatgpt.com tag to outgoing links, as described in OpenAI’s publisher FAQ.
Count leads, not sessions
Sessions say little until you connect them to enquiries. Work in this order.
- Mark key events. In GA4, mark form submissions, calls, WhatsApp clicks and bookings as key events. GA4 now uses “key events” for what it used to call conversions.
- Store the source with each lead. Pass the session source into a hidden form field, so your CRM or inbox shows where the person came from.
- Ask people. Add “How did you hear about us?” to the form and the first call. Many AI-influenced buyers return later through a brand search.
- Qualify. Agree with your sales team what a qualified lead is, and tag it in the CRM.
Then calculate three simple numbers each month.
| Metric | Formula | Illustrative example |
|---|---|---|
| AI session conversion rate | Key events from AI sessions ÷ AI sessions × 100 | 6 ÷ 200 × 100 = 3% |
| Qualified lead rate | Qualified leads ÷ all leads × 100 | 3 ÷ 6 × 100 = 50% |
| Cost per qualified lead | Cost attributed to the channel ÷ qualified leads | ₹30,000 ÷ 3 = ₹10,000 |
These figures are examples to show the arithmetic. They are not benchmarks.
With a few dozen AI sessions a month, a single enquiry swings the rate wildly. Judge the trend over a quarter, not week to week.
Why the numbers will undercount
Even with good tracking, AI search influence is partly invisible.
- A buyer may see your name in an answer, then search for you later. That visit shows as organic or direct.
- Some clicks arrive without referrer data and land in Direct.
- Citations and clicks are different events. A page can be cited often and clicked rarely.
- Buyers use several channels before an enquiry, so last-click reports credit only the final one.
This is why self-reported attribution and CRM notes belong next to the GA4 report, not instead of it.
A 30-day set-up plan
| Week | Task | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Export the last 90 days of traffic and enquiries | Baseline numbers |
| 2 | Check the AI Assistant channel and add a custom group if needed | Clean AI channel in reports |
| 3 | Mark key events and add the hidden source field and the “how did you hear” question | Every lead carries a source |
| 4 | Review the first numbers with whoever handles sales | A one-page monthly view |
Our analytics and reporting service sets up exactly this kind of view for client sites.
Final thoughts
AI search traffic is worth tracking, but not worth betting a budget on yet. It is a small share of visits, and the two best studies suggest it converts a little better than organic search.
The practical step is the same either way: measure from visit to qualified lead, and keep the trend. To get AI answers mentioning your business in the first place, read our AI search optimization guide and our piece on getting mentioned in ChatGPT.
If you would like help with the tracking, Digital BizStar can set it up and report on it each month.
Frequently asked questions
Does AI search traffic convert better than organic search traffic?
Slightly, in the two best studies we found: about 1.26 times organic in a Siege Media study of 78 sites, and about 1.5 times in Brainlabs data from 54 accounts. Results vary by industry, and both use last-click attribution. Check your own GA4 and CRM data before assuming it.
How do I track traffic from ChatGPT?
Open GA4 Traffic acquisition and look at the AI Assistant channel. ChatGPT also adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links it sends, so you can filter by that source. Visits that arrive with no referrer will still show as Direct.
Can Google Analytics track all AI search traffic?
No. GA4’s AI Assistant channel excludes Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and clicks from those appear as normal Google organic traffic. Clicks with no referrer land in Direct, and no tool shows the visits that happen after a person remembers your name.
What is the most important metric for AI search performance?
Qualified leads from AI-referred visits, followed to revenue where you can. Mentions, citations and sessions are early signals. They matter only if they lead to enquiries you want.
How long does it take for AI search traffic to produce leads?
There is no reliable benchmark. It depends on whether your pages answer the questions buyers ask assistants and how often you are cited. Track monthly for at least a quarter before judging, because the numbers are small.
