How to Get Your Business Mentioned in ChatGPT and Other AI Tools

You can't pay ChatGPT to recommend you, and there's no form to fill in. It names businesses it can find and trust across the web. Here's how it chooses, eight steps to improve your chances, and how to check whether it's working.

To get your business mentioned in ChatGPT, make it easy to find and easy to trust. Let OpenAI's search crawler reach your site, keep your business details identical everywhere, answer buyers' questions clearly on your pages, and earn reviews and mentions on the sites ChatGPT reads, such as listings, articles, Reddit and YouTube. Then test the same questions every month.

The same steps help with Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google's AI Overviews.

  1. 1Testwhat AI tools say today

Can you pay or submit your business to ChatGPT?

No. There's no sign-up form for businesses and no fee that buys a place in ChatGPT's answers. OpenAI began showing ads in ChatGPT in 2026, including in India, but it says ads are labelled, kept apart from answers and don't change what ChatGPT recommends.

That means the only lasting way in is to become a business ChatGPT can find, understand and trust. More people are asking: OpenAI said ChatGPT passed 900 million weekly users in February 2026, and many of them ask it which product, clinic, school or supplier to choose.

How ChatGPT chooses the businesses it names

ChatGPT answers from two places: what its model learned during training, and pages it looks up on the web when a question needs fresh or local information. Questions like “best physiotherapist in Tambaram” usually trigger a web search, so being findable online today matters more than what the model learned a year ago.

When it searches, it reads several sources and looks for agreement. A business that appears with the same details on its own website, Google, Bing, directories, review sites and articles looks like a safe answer. A business that appears in one place, with details that don't match, looks risky, so it's often left out.

New to the terms? Our guide to AEO vs SEO vs GEO explains how this work fits alongside normal SEO.

Step 1: Test what ChatGPT says about you today

Before changing anything, find out where you stand. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot the questions your buyers would ask, and write down who gets named. This becomes your baseline.

  1. Best [your service] in [your area]for example, “best physiotherapy clinic in Tambaram”
  2. Which [service] in Chennai is good for [type of customer]?“… good for small businesses”, “… good for first-time buyers”
  3. How much does [service] cost in Chennai?see whose prices or pages it quotes
  4. What is [your business name] known for?checks whether it knows you at all, and gets the facts right
  5. [Your business name] reviewsshows which review sites it trusts
  6. Compare [your business] and [a competitor]reveals the gaps in how you're described

Use a new chat for each question, and repeat the same list every month. Answers change from day to day, so look at the pattern over several checks, not one result. Note which websites each tool cites, because those are the sites to target in step 6.

Step 2: Let AI crawlers reach your website

ChatGPT can only use your pages if OpenAI's search crawler is allowed to read them. Check your robots.txt file, your security plugin and any firewall or CDN settings, because some block AI crawlers by default.

  • OAI-SearchBot: finds pages for ChatGPT's search answers. OpenAI says sites that block it won't be shown in those answers. Allow it.
  • GPTBot: collects pages for training OpenAI's models. Blocking it is your choice and doesn't stop ChatGPT search from finding you.
  • Bingbot and Googlebot: Microsoft Copilot draws on Bing's index, and Gemini and AI Overviews on Google's. Never block these.
  • PerplexityBot: lets Perplexity find and cite your pages.

Also make sure your key text is in the page's HTML, not only inside images, PDFs or scripts that load later. Analysis of AI crawler traffic by Vercel found that most AI crawlers don't run JavaScript, so text that only appears after a script runs may never be seen.

Step 3: Make your business details match everywhere

Use exactly the same business name, address, phone number, opening hours and one-line description on every profile. Small differences, such as an old phone number on one directory, make AI tools less sure they've got the right business.

  • Google Business Profile: feeds Google Maps, AI Overviews and Gemini's local answers.
  • Bing Places for Business: feeds Bing and Copilot. Many Indian businesses never claim it, so it's an easy win.
  • Justdial and Sulekha: widely used local directories in India that AI tools often read.
  • Your trade's own platform: IndiaMART or TradeIndia for suppliers, Practo for healthcare, Zomato or Swiggy for food, Clutch or GoodFirms for agencies and IT firms, G2 or Capterra for software.
  • Social profiles: LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, all with the same name and description.

On your website, add Organization or LocalBusiness schema with a “sameAs” list linking to these profiles. It tells search engines that they all belong to one business.

Step 4: Answer buyers' questions on your own site

Give each service its own page that answers what a buyer wants to know before calling: what you do, for whom, where, how long it takes and roughly what it costs. Put each question in a heading and answer it in the first two or three sentences below.

Specific lines get quoted, vague ones don't. “We offer quality interior solutions” tells an AI tool nothing. “We design and fit modular kitchens across south Chennai, usually within 45 days of sign-off” gives it a service, an area and a timeframe it can repeat.

  • Name the areas you serve and the types of customer you suit best.
  • Publish price ranges, even broad ones, with what changes the price.
  • Add an FAQ section to each service page, with FAQ schema.
  • Keep an up-to-date About page with your founders, team, years in business and registrations.

Step 5: Add facts AI tools can quote

AI tools favour content with clear facts and named sources. In the Princeton-led study that coined the term GEO, adding quotations lifted a page's visibility in AI answers by about 41%, adding statistics by about 30% and citing sources by about 27%.

  • Your own numbers: projects completed, years in business, average delivery time, customer ratings.
  • Expert quotes: a line from your founder or a named specialist on your team.
  • Sources: link to the official guideline, study or standard behind any claim.
  • Your name beside each figure: mention your business by name right next to the numbers, so anything quoted from that passage still names you.

Step 6: Earn mentions on lists, articles and forums

This step usually makes the biggest difference. Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands found that mentions of a brand across the web lined up with AI visibility more closely than backlinks did. When ChatGPT builds a shortlist, it leans on what other sites say about you.

  1. Best-of lists: look at the articles AI tools cited in step 1 and ask those publishers to consider you, with a short, factual case for why.
  2. Local and trade press: share a useful story, survey or tip with city news sites and industry magazines.
  3. Associations: join chambers of commerce and trade bodies that list members online.
  4. Reddit and Quora: answer questions in your field helpfully, say who you are, and follow each community's rules. Sales pitches get removed.
  5. YouTube: short videos that answer common questions. AI tools can read video titles, descriptions and transcripts.
  6. LinkedIn: posts and articles from your founders build a public record of expertise. Our LinkedIn marketing team can help.

Step 7: Collect reviews that say something

Reviews tell AI tools what you're good at. A review that says “they fixed our office AC in Porur the same day” is far more useful than five stars and “good service”.

  • Ask happy customers to mention the service they used and their area.
  • Spread reviews across Google, plus the one or two platforms that matter most in your trade.
  • Reply to every review, including the negative ones, calmly and specifically.
  • Never buy or write fake reviews. It breaks Google's policies and India's consumer rules, and it can get your profile suspended.

Step 8: Track ChatGPT visits and enquiries

Mentions only matter if they bring customers. Google Analytics 4 shows visits from AI tools as referrals, and ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to many of the links it shows, which makes them easy to spot.

  1. In GA4, open Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition.
  2. Change the main dimension to Session source / medium.
  3. Search for chatgpt, then repeat for perplexity, gemini and copilot.
  4. Check that form submissions and calls are set up as key events, so you can see enquiries, not just visits.
  5. Add “ChatGPT or another AI tool” as an option when you ask new enquiries how they found you. Many people read an AI answer, then search for you by name.

Our analytics and reporting service can set this up and combine it with your monthly AI test.

How long does it take to get mentioned?

Usually a few months. Crawler and listing fixes take days, but ChatGPT needs to see consistent signals across several sites before it starts naming you regularly.

Perplexity searches the web for nearly every question, so changes can show up there first. Answers that rely more on what a model learned during training update slowly. For local and specific questions, many businesses see a change within two to three months. Competitive, national questions take longer.

What doesn't work

  • “Guaranteed” ChatGPT rankingsNobody controls what AI tools say. Treat any guarantee as a sales line.
  • Fake reviews or planted postsThey get removed, can get accounts banned, and damage trust when spotted.
  • Keyword stuffingThe GEO study found it gave little or no improvement in AI answers.
  • Relying on llms.txtIt's optional. Google says you don't need AI text files for its AI features.
  • Blocking the wrong crawlerBlocking OAI-SearchBot to stop training also keeps you out of ChatGPT search.
  • Key details hidden in imagesPrices or services shown only in a picture or PDF are easy for crawlers to miss.

If you'd rather have a team handle all eight steps, see our GEO services in Chennai. The groundwork overlaps with SEO, so the two work best together.

Getting mentioned in ChatGPT: FAQs

Can I pay to have ChatGPT recommend my business?

No. OpenAI now shows labelled ads in ChatGPT, including in India, but it says ads are kept separate from answers and don't influence them. The recommendations inside an answer can't be bought.

Can I submit my business to ChatGPT?

There's no submission form for businesses. Make sure OpenAI's search crawler can reach your site, claim your Google and Bing listings, and keep your details consistent across directories. That's how ChatGPT finds you.

Does SEO help my business show up in ChatGPT?

Yes. ChatGPT looks pages up on the web, and pages that search engines rank and trust are easier for it to find. Strong SEO is the base for AI visibility, not a separate project.

Why does ChatGPT give a different answer each time?

Each answer is written fresh, and it can change with the wording, your location, chat history and whether ChatGPT searched the web. That's why you should test the same list of questions regularly and judge the trend.

ChatGPT shows wrong details about my business. How do I fix it?

Fix the sources it's reading. Wrong details usually come from an old listing or an outdated page. Update your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places and directories, then check again in a few weeks. You can also flag a wrong answer with the thumbs-down button.

How do I know if ChatGPT is sending me customers?

Look for chatgpt.com in GA4's traffic acquisition report, and ask new enquiries how they found you. Many people read an AI answer and then search your name, so the form question catches visits analytics misses.

How much do GEO services cost in India?

Published 2026 pricing guides put GEO and AEO work at about ₹15,000–₹60,000 a month for small and growing businesses, and from ₹75,000 to well over ₹1,00,000 a month for dedicated teams with PR and content, before GST. These are market ranges, not our price list. See our digital marketing packages guide for other services.

Do these steps work for Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot too?

Mostly, yes. Gemini and AI Overviews lean on Google's index and your Google Business Profile, Copilot on Bing and Bing Places, and Perplexity searches live and cites its sources. Consistent details, clear pages and real mentions help with all of them.
